Buffalo Grove, IL, Monday, January 23, 2012

Siemens Building Technologies Division announced today the launch of its Facility Prime™ native Apple iOS application for the APOGEE® Building Automation System (BAS). Through customized screens, Facility Prime enables fast, convenient, mobile interaction with a multitude of facility conditions.

Facility Prime goes beyond accessing data and provides two-way interaction between users and the building automation systems they manage. Siemens’ versatile application connects users to APOGEE BAS control and monitoring functions via wireless network connectivity. The application directly interacts with BACnet/IP and Siemens APOGEE P2 field panels.

Users can develop their own customized interface graphics using Facility Prime Editor or, if desired, have their local Siemens representative create a dynamic interface to suit their facility management needs. After accessing the network, users can view environmental conditions via this custom-tailored interface. Users can also connect to their facility’s BAS via the enterprise’s virtual private network if available. After proper access credentials are authenticated, users can command points and equipment. Commands made from Facility Prime are logged in the APOGEE Insight System Activity Log.

Facility Prime delivers a variety of convenient, but powerful facility systems management features to the dynamic iPad platform including:

The “Graphics” view, which allows Facility Prime users to monitor in real-time building environmental conditions and HVAC equipment;

A “Report” function that captures current conditions and either saves the GUI image as a file or embeds it in an email;

A patent-pending “Scan” function which opens a scanning feature employing Quick Response (QR) barcodes to trigger actions such as navigating to graphics;

A “List” view providing a quick, non-graphical status check of important data points with Green / Red color bar status;

A “Charts” function that provides key static or dynamic graphs for analysis of facility data, and

A “Tools” view providing Editor Function users the ability to browse and command selected facility data objects.

Facility Prime becomes available in February. For more information contact your local Siemens Building Technologies representative or visit:

Simetal EAF FAST DRI Boosts Productivity of Electric Steel Production by up to 15 Percent

ATLANTA— Siemens today announced that it has developed a new electric arc furnace (EAF) specifically developed for direct reduced iron (DRI) melting. Now available in the North American market, the Simetal EAF FAST DRI is designed for a continuous melting process as electrical energy input and DRI are supplied during tapping, which shortens tap-to-tap times and reduces specific energy consumption.

Compared with conventional arc furnaces, tap-to-tap times can be reduced by up to 15 percent, energy consumption is cut by 20 kilowatt-hours per ton and electrode consumption falls by 10 percent. The continuous supply of electrical energy during flat-bath operation not only improves productivity, but also avoids line harmonic distortions such as flicker. Using this technology from Siemens, a 150-ton furnace can increase overall productivity by approximately 15 percent.

With the patented furnace advanced slag-free tapping system (FAST), charging, tapping and taphole refilling are possible under power-on conditions. Slag-free tapping results in an enhanced alloys yield and better steel desulfurization, making installation of additional burners unnecessary.

The Simetal EAF FAST DRI is designed in combination with Siemens’ Hot Transport System (HTS), enabling it to be fed with hot DRI at temperatures of around 600°C. Due to the modular design of the new electric arc furnace, existing furnace installations can also be retrofitted with FAST DRI technology.

Siemens Contributes Training Modules and Technology to Support Hands-On Courses

Buffalo Grove, IL, Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut Calif. has just graduated its first HVAC/Mechanical Controls Class using building controls Training Modules and products contributed by Siemens Building Technologies Division. The program was developed for the school by Rick Creed of Air-Ex Air Conditioning in Pomona, a Siemens Value-Added Partner (VAP).

The program which falls under the Industrial and Welding Departments at the college was funded under a grant by the California Department of Labor. Currently the course is offered as a government program only to those either underemployed or unemployed. According to Creed however, the college is planning on financing the program itself in mid-2012 and intends to offer it to all students.

Teaching at the school for more than 10 years, Creed said “Mt. San Antonio College has always had a strong mechanical and refrigeration program but we always felt there was a gap in not having a controls program. Siemens was the logical choice because of Air-Ex’s relationship as a Siemens Value Added Partner.” According to Creed, the school had limited funding through an original $2 million grant of which more than half was allocated for infrastructure and administrative cost. “Siemens helped us financially overcome the cost issues,” said Creed.

Siemens also contributes in an advisory capacity as well. Dennis King, Southwest Regional Sales Manager for Siemens VAP Talon brand controls was invited to represent Siemens on the Mt. San Antonio College’s Mechanical and Controls Advisory Board. “It is a great way to give back to the community, develop skill sets we need from potential employees and work toward the future of the industry,” said King.

The program course work is based on Siemens BACnet Training Modules as well as controls and other Siemens Talon product line devices. Classes are held in a dedicated building that offers five zones to simulate different buildings and building HVAC control issues. The facility enables students not only to learn programming but also installation techniques and controls troubleshooting in a real-world environment.

The entire program is a two year process. Once enrolled, students go through five phases of training—not only at Mt. San Antonio but also at two other colleges: Chaffey College and Rio Hondo College in Rancho Cucamonga and Pico Rivera, Calif. respectively. During the course, students are treated as if they were employed full time, exposed to a real-world working environment which includes an interview process to enter the program. Upon graduation the students receive an Associate’s Degree in Mechanical and Industrial Arts.

For the last graduating class the college hosted a career day where perspective employers were invited to meet the students. “All the students were placed with positions including two hired by the local Siemens branch and another picked up by a Siemens VAP,” said Creed. “Because Siemens knows first-hand current technology trends and is helping shape the future of the industry, Siemens input has been invaluable, helping Mt. San Antonio College equip its students for their own future careers in building automation and control.”

Energy savings provided by Siemens technology will offset family’s electric bill

ATLANTA—Siemens today announced a $100,000 partnership with Habitat for Humanity to build the organization’s first solar home in Georgia. Volunteers will work side-by-side with future homeowner Melonie Lingo and her teenage children, Luke and Madie, starting at the first-nail ceremony on January 21, 2012.

Vast expertise in both electrical and solar systems uniquely positions Siemens to assist Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia (HFH-NCG) with solar panel technology and infrastructure that will reduce the Lingo family’s future electric costs. Located at Union Hill in Cumming, the home will receive a Siemens Microinverter System that will convert the sun’s power into safe, affordable electric power.

“Our Microinverter System will create enough energy to offset most, if not all, of the family’s lifetime of electric utility bills,” says Barry Contrael, director, Siemens Low Voltage business unit. “This technology will potentially save the family hundreds of dollars per year.”

HFH-NCG’s integration of Siemens’ technology is a vital component of Habitat’s mission to provide ongoing affordable housing and sustainable building practices for deserving families in the north Georgia area. Siemens will provide employee volunteer labor for the 2012 solar home, along with full sponsorship of the build and the solar panel technology.

“The Union Hill address is appropriate because it symbolizes the union and partnership between the Lingos, Siemens, all the volunteers and HFH-NCG,” says Russ Hayes, CEO, Habitat for Humanity, North Central Georgia. “We believe this home will be a shining example of Siemens’ technology and dedication to the community and the HFH mission.”

The house is scheduled to be completed and dedicated to the Lingo family on April 21, 2012.

Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity – North Central Georgia is a non-profit, Christian housing ministry that builds simple, decent homes for purchase by low income families who demonstrate a capacity for responsible homeownership. Since its inception in 1995, 222 homes have been completed and over 850 family members have been served in North Fulton, Cherokee and Forsyth/Dawson counties. Each family is required to attend 10 educational classes and perform 300 sweat equity hours. Families earn between 25% and 60% of the Atlanta area median income and purchase their homes from Habitat which provides them with a 30-year, no-interest loan. Family members work side by side with the volunteers, sponsors, and Habitat staff to build their homes. These families not only get to experience the pride of homeownership but they also know that their lives will be changed forever.
